Explores the political and historical evolution of relations between Ukraine and Russia from 1900 to the present, with particular focus on the Soviet period from 1917 onward. Examines Ukrainian debates about autonomy and independence in the pre-revolutionary period; the revolutions of 1905 and 1917; the creation of the new Soviet state; the wars of 1917-1922; industrialization and collectivization, including the famines of 1932-1933; Stalinism; World War II; reform and stagnation; attempts at reform under Gorbachev; and, finally, the dramatic divergence of the two regions after 1991.
