Come solve puzzles with your friends!
The MIT Mystery Hunt is a puzzlehunt competition that takes place every year during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend. The hunt challenges each participating team to solve a huge variety of puzzles which lead to an object (called a “coin”). The winning team gets to write the subsequent year’s hunt!
But you don't need to solve a hundred plus puzzles to have fun! Get paired up with another team or only pop by for a few hours and solve whatever type of puzzle you most like: crosswords, Sudoku, lists of songs and images.
The entire hunt will be held online this year from noon EST on Friday, January 15 until 10 AM EST on Monday, January 18. More info and a registration portal can be found here.

Chalk of the Day Art Workshops
Jessie Wang, Jessica Xu
Enrollment: Unlimited: No advance sign-up
Attendance: Participants welcome at individual sessions
For several years, student-run Chalk of the Day (instagram.com/chalkoftheday) has brought joy to the MIT community with uplifting daily murals in the Stata Center (Building 32). With campus closing due to the pandemic, the project has been on a hiatus.
This IAP, we’re reviving the online version of Chalk of the Day by hosting 3 online workshops on chalk lettering and chalk art. Students will follow along at the workshops and are encouraged to submit the art that they’ve created during the workshops. At the first workshop, we’ll also raffle off free chalk art materials for 20 participants to use for the remaining workshops (US addresses only).
After the workshops are finished, digital pieces made by workshop participants will be made available for the public to purchase as stickers. A limited quantity of subsidized stickers will be raffled off to participants of any workshop.
No previous experience required. Sign up here to receive the Zoom link and indicate your topics of interest: http://tiny.cc/ChalkIAP

English Change-Ringing: A Mathematical-Musical Team Sport
Danielle Morse
Enrollment: Unlimited: No advance sign-up
Attendance: Participants welcome at individual sessions
Join the MIT Guild of Bellringers for an introduction to the history, math, and practice of English Change Ringing. Change Ringing is an art-form going back to the 15th century which involves teams of ringers working together to ring bells in weaving patterns that never repeat themselves, algorithmically generating musical permutations. The practice has deep connections to mathematics, particularly to group theory and graph theory, and also has a rich history both in England and in Boston itself. In this course, we'll introduce you to both the history and practice of change ringing, virtually. We’ll use an online virtual ringing platform, developed by an MIT grad student, to learn the basics of change ringing, and supplement with short talks on change ringing topics.
Here is an introductory video on change ringing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lyDCUKsWZs
We’ll start the class on zoom, then move to Discord and RingingRoom for the practice sessions.

Sign-up by 01/07
Limited to 20 participants
Attendance: Participants welcome at individual sessions
Fee: $25.00
for kit and fabricated parts
Design and make your own pinball game AND learn how to use CAD software and Maker tools in the process.
How it works:
Assemble our blank pinball machine kit, then learn and use the Maker tools in our lab remotely: 3D printer, laser cutter, vinyl cutter. We send you the kit to start, you send us files for component fabrication, and we send parts back to you. Simple electronics for buzzers and flashing lights are also included in the kit with instructions for circuits and ideas for actuating switches. How about 2-person pinball? This kit is designed to be easily combined with another for a 2-player game.
See the kit and sample machines see this slide presentation.
We have online training sessions for each Maker tool, and office hours for help with any part of the project.
In February, we’d love to re-ignite our community of innovative designers, mentors and builders at the Edgerton Center Student Project Lab/Makerlodge. Bring your machine back to campus, come over to our lab in 4-409, and continue improving your pinball machine, or start another project. In addition to digital fabrication tools, we’ve got electronics, Arduinos, shop tools, a large assortment of project materials, and fun people to help you use them.
Kits can only be shipped within the continental US. There is a charge of $25 to register, receive a kit, and receive any other parts fabricated for you at the MIT Edgerton Center.
APPLY on this form by Thurs Jan 7, 5pm EST. Preference to MIT undergrads

Calling all creative writers! Want to write something creative but need some motivation or support or some thoughtful readers? Join other MIT writers to get advice about your own writing, to be a reader of other writers' work, and/or to get inspiration to write something. Any type of creative writing is welcomed: e.g., fiction, poetry, literary nonfiction, memoirs, personal essays, plays, blog entries, book reviews. We help each other get started on a creative writing project, we help each other develop ideas and style, and we function as engaged and encouraging readers of each other's material. The Group includes emerging and established writers. We meet every Monday from noon-1:00 p.m. Open to MIT undergraduate and graduate students, post-docs, lecturers, staff, faculty, spouses and partners. Please note that this is not a class and not a group for technical writing or for thesis writing. Meeting time: noon-1:00 p.m.

MIT List Visual Arts Center invites community members to participate in a one-use camera photo project and capture new daily routines. Visualizing Daily Rituals hopes to help participants overcome physical distance with another offline project that encourages members of the MIT community to be aware of their daily rituals and immediate surroundings. Participants of Visualizing Daily Rituals can reflect on routines and developed habits, and consider the limited number exposure camera as a measure of time. The project encourages us to think about sharing images if there is temporal delay between taking, processing, digitalizing, and sharing images.
Participants will take photos and receive a photo book as a physical reminder of the connectedness to others in our daily lives.
To participate:
Please fill out the Google Form with your address to receive a disposable camera and packaging materials for return.
Take photos with the provided camera of parts of your daily routine, rituals, or habits that have become important to you.
Place your camera and film processing order form in prepaid packaging, and mail to the Process One imaging lab no later than Friday, January 22.
The photos will be developed and you will receive your digital processed photos.
One image per participant will be selected to be included in a printed photo book.
